Call me old fashioned - many people do - but isn't this just a bit humiliating for the players involved.
Especially listing the bloody values on the website - if i was one of the players i'd be absolutely furious.
What if you don't get any bids at all - or like Steve Patterson some thinks you're worth £20..?

This is a good idea but it's badly thought out and shouldn't be conducted so publicly.
it's frankly embarrassing.

Wonder if one of the local pie shops (Andrew Jones of Huddersfield perhaps) has enough courage to put in the winning bid for Mags.

Likewise one of the local hairdressing salons could bid for Ryan Sidebottom.

Don't get too upset about it Steve - its all in a good cause and will be fed back into ground improvements for the benefits of members (if you believe that!)

How do you hold an auction which provides anyone with a chance to bid without making it public Steve C?

All the money raised is going to raise the standard of facilities for members and supporters, mainly in the Indoor Cricket Centre where work has already started.

We have until 9 March before the auction ends - I might be wrong but I seriously doubt that any player will be unsold or still at £20 by then.

We're trying something different for player sponsorship after raising over £5,000 for charity in 2011 through similar social media and website auctions. All of the players are aware of this initiative and right behind it.

I don't mind criticism at all, but do it when you've seen the end results and not when we've just started Steve. This provides supporters and local businesses with a real chance to get closer to the club and raise their profile while raising funds. Where's the harm?

Cheers James

i'm all in favour of new ideas James and i wish you well with it - but do we have to have a running total published on the website? I think you run the risk of publicly humiliating some of the players before the season even starts.
And what happens if a lap dancing club wants to sponsor a player - or a curry house offers to sponsor mags? Are you going to have Ryan sponsored by a hairdresser or Adam Lyth sponsored by a wig manufacturer?
I'm sorry - my initial reaction was a little over hasty and i hate sounding negative over new ideas - i just don't think this has been properly thought through.

Steve, If such situations arose we would of course make a judgement and involve the player in that decision - the Club certainly doesn't want to embarrass any of its team members. The players do have a sense of humour though and I can imagine a couple of your scenarios appealing - remember the umpires were (or are) sponsored by Specsavers!!

We have thought long and hard about doing this and decided to give it a go. If it falls flat we will pick up the pieces and try something else next time around. But as I type we have already received bids of nearly £2K and the reaction from the majority has been extremely positive.

If the Club sat back and did nothing you could rightly have a pop, but the staff at Headingley are trying to make a difference in a very tough economic climate. As I'm not one of the full staff anymore I think if frees me up to say that they should be applauded for their initiative.

I think we'll have to agree to differ on this one James.
I'm really sorry to be negative - I just think you're in danger of underselling yourselves.
Good luck with it regardless - and congratulations on tyring something imaginative and a little different.
Like you, i fully appreciate the efforts of the YCCC staff in these difficult times and applaud all of your initiatives!

For what it's worth I'm probably nearer the views expressed by Steve rather than James but lets just see it as a bit of harmless (or perhaps charmless) fun. Might deflate a few egos when players realize we don't value them to quite the same extend as they value themselves.

Looking at the most recent bids - good to see St Michael of Sheffield digging deep for Mags.

Its a clever tactical bid by Vaughan to pitch high early on and stop the pie shops from bidding.

Can we see Gough and others doing likewise?

Perhaps president elect could dig deep and sponsor Joe Sayers?

And Director of Cricket could sponsor young Jonathan Moxon and deduct from his pocket money

It does seem rather tacky to me too, but if the club have decided that it is a good money-making opportunity and the players don't object then fair enough. It is very open to some joker on Twitter making a slly bid though...

I actually think that is an innovative way of drumming up support and getting much needed funds into the club. The YCCC Twitter feed is excellent and has over 10,000 followers with plenty of heated debate on there amongstthe community. I think that the club should be applauded for the way that it has embraced social media and (for once) is at the forefront of these new methods of reaching out to YCCC supporters and followers.

I'd like to sponsor George Hirst, as long as I get to sit next to him.

suspect you would still get more sense out of him than you would sitting on the same table as Richard Hutton by all accounts

Although I think this is all a bit tacky, it's actually quite interesting looking at the bids - £50 for Rashid looks a bargin.

great to see Goughy has not lost his sense of humour sponsoring the physio!

Not sure how Mags is attracting the largest bids - lets face it, you get to sit at the same table as him at the pre-season dinner but with his appetite there won't be that much left for you!

And who has pre-bought Joe Sayers?
Or did he perhaps say that he would prefer not to be auctioned off?

I would think following your post last week that you're the prime suspect on that count, Steve!
