I'll be disappointed if Ballance is batting at 7 after most of us thought he should be promoted this year after making so many unbeaten 50s in 2011...

me too - so whats your solution?

Dizzy and Windy may get lucky here - the weather in Leeds today is awful and forecast not great for rest of the week so we may never know what our batting order would have been in the Essex game

Perhaps we should discuss some of our other players.

Ok - such as?

And who would you leave out to find room for Jaques if not Mags

Well i think it would be useful to try and offer some encouragement where we can.
Both Adil and Ajmal bowled well against Kent. I think AJ was unlucky not to get more wickets and Adil is probably the best all rounder we have. They both underperformed last year so it's great to see them returning to somehting like their potential this year.
I'd go with seven batsmen and four bowlers - Shahhzad/Sidebottom/Rashid and Patterson - all four of them can bat to an extent so whoever ends up batting at 7 needn't panic unduly about having no support at the other end.

I don't think we should be hoping for bad weather either - i think Essex are very beatable and just hope we have enough time to do the job.

cricket writer of the year, Chris Waters, agrees with Patto over Wardlaw in todays YP.

Yes, fair point re Shahzad and Rashid who bowled well v Kent from what I saw on the day I was there, without much luck.

On day one I did notice Patto spend a fair bit of time on the bounday edge and walking around with Dizzy - encouraging sign that one of our back up seamers is keen to listen and learn.

On the positive side (and we do like to take whatever positives we can) Mags is motivated by criticism so when he hits a double ton v Essex I shall claim credit

"This time, however, McGrath is fully fit and determined to shove his detractors’ words back down their throats."

Crikey. Looking at the photo, if he's fully fit, I'm off to the Olympics.

Well before the season I would have gone with:

Root
Jaques
Gale
Ballance
Bairstow
Lyth
Rashid
Pyrah
Shahzad
Sidebottom
Patterson/ Ashraf

so I'd probably stick with that line-up, bringing Mags in for the now-injured Pyrah. It may seem counterintuitive promoting Ballance but leaving Bairstow at 5, but I think he's getting a good enough opportunity at 5 as it is (he's scored a double century batting there) and he's just very good in that position so I would be reluctant to move him. Plus if/when he plays Test cricket for England he'll realistically be batting at 5/6 so there's no harm in practising that role.

Agree about the weather, the forecast doesn't look promising and Leeds looks pretty wet from overnight rain this morning...

Yep, it wasn't a team based on any realistic expectation.
